- The museum is located in the former monastery of Santo Domingo de Guzmán, one of the most important architectural and historical monuments in the country. Its exhibition galleries offer an archaeological, historical, and ethnographic panorama of Oaxacan cultures. Construction began in 1575 and the last phase was completed in 1731. It is a monumental building and a splendid architectural example of the viceregal period. The beauty of the altarpieces and decorations of the adjoining church add to its grandeur. It shares this space with other cultural and educational institutions, such as the Francisco de Burgoa Library, the Ethnobotanical Historical Garden, the Néstor Sánchez Public Newspaper Library of Oaxaca, and the Church of Santo Domingo, which is open for worship.
