| 520 | |aA partir del debilitamiento teotihuacano, alrededor del año 650 d.C., surgen varios sitios con características defensivas en toda Mesoamérica. Se ha considerado a Xochicalco como una ciudad de orden defensivo y militar, desde la primera vez que se visitó en 1777, dada la presencia de murallas, bastiones y fosos. Investigaciones recientes —aunadas a trabajos anteriores en una de las entradas principales a Xochicalco— ratifican que entre los años 650 y 1100 d.C., estos elementos arquitectónicos tuvieron una función defensiva, a pesar de que involucran diferentes áreas de actividad, incluyendo las de tipo ritual. La ciudad tenía todo previsto para efectuar la defensa ante un asalto, un ataque frontal o por los costados, la invasión, la escalada, el confinamiento, todo menos un conflicto interno que le llevaría a su total abandono. |
| 520 | |aIt has been proposed that many cities that arose after the fall of Teotihuacan (ca. AD 650) had a defensive function. Since the first recorded visit to Xochicalco (in 1777), it has been regarded as a military, defensive center due to the appearances of walls, pits and bastions. Recent excavations at Xochicalco —along with earlier explorations at one of the main entrances to the city— show that between AD 650 and 1100 these architectural features had a primarily defensive function, even though they enclosed areas that involved different kind of activities, including ritual ones. The city was ready for almost any attack, from the front or the sides, byclimbing, siege or invasion; everything but the internal revolt that lead to its final abandonment. |
