This volcano is twelve thousand feet high- twice as hig as Vesuvius and much higher than Mount Etna, the two great volcanic peaks of Italy. Colima is not so high as Popocatepetl or its majestic neighbor, Ixtlaccihuatl; but it is still active whereas its to hihger neighbors have long been extinct or dormant. From the crater of Colima smoke ans steam ascend in a colums hundreds of feet high. The volcano is about fifteen miles west of tyxpan (toos'pän), a typical Indian pueblo, on the river of the same name, from near the banks of which this view was taken. The extension of the Mexican Central Railway which runs down from Guadalajara to the southwest to Manzanillo, an important port on the Pacific, makes it possible for the traveler to reach one of the most picturesque and fertile sections of western Mexico. Much of the country in this region is very picturesque, consisting of a succession of fine valleys dotted, here and there, with little lakes and flanked by mountains of volcanic origin. Much interest attaches to Colima because of its volcanic activity, and many tourists will be attracted to Jalisco on its account. However, there are many persons who, remembering what happened to Herculaneum and Pompeii, would prefer to live near dormant Popocatepetl than active Colima. Copyright by The Keystone View Company". Nota: éste volcán se ubica entre los estados de Colima y Jalisco, es un estratovolcán y sus erupciones se han considerado explosivas. A lo largo de quinientos años ha presentado más de 40 explosiones desde 1576, destacando las de 1585,1606, 1622, 1690, 1818, 1890, 1903, la más violenta la de 1913, y las más recientes las de febrero de 1999 y la del 6 de junio de 2005.
