And even in the case of the humble peon it is a most noticeable part of his outfit. This native hat-maker is weaving straw hats such as the poorer Mexicans wear, in the market place in Queretaro. The dress of the poorer class, or peons, is very much the same throughout Mexico. The Men wear a loose suit of white linen, coat and trousers, though sometimes no coat is worn, whose shade of whiteness wil be determined by the cleanlines of the wearer. The sooner after washday, the cleaner and whiter the suit of the peon. The trousers are often rolled up to the knee, in which event the native goes with bare feet and legs; but frequently the trousers are worn down to the ankles, with sandals strapped over the feet. Stockings are never worn by the peon, but what he lacks in stockings, he makes up in hat. On the peon's head is perched a huge steeple-crowned straw sombrero, with a brim anything up to two feet in width. This wide brim is quite a useful, severing as a shade from the sun, an umbrella in case of rain, and a basket in which fish or vegetables may be carried after marketing. Mexicans of a higher class will wear hat as expensive as they can afford to buy. The sombrero used by the more wealthy Mexican is sometimes a handsome panama, woven under water, of the quality straw; but is also often of heavy felt about a quarter of an inch thick, decorated with gold and silver tinsel embroidery. In country districts the wealth of man is frequently shown by the style of his hat. Copyright by The Keystone View Company.", lleva sellados en la parte superior los números; "33" y "65".
