The central hill of the city commands a glorious view of noble mountains and fertile valleys. Among the valley's characteristic products is the mango. Those who taste it place it among the most delicious of mother Nature's gifts to her children. Man has assisted nature in no small degree in envolving, through the ages, this perfect fruit that is now found in all tropical lands, from its stringy forebear that grew wild in the East Indies. The tree is valuable also for beauty and shade. We look with admiration at its dense, spreading, glossy foliage, growing to a height of thirty or forty feet. The fruit varies in shape, size, color and flavor, as our plums do. It is of the type of the plum, with a fleshy exterior that covers a hard-shelled stone which encloses the seed. The ripe mango has a delicious blending of sweetness and acidity in its flavor. The kernels also maybe eaten. The tree is generally raised from seed, but the finer varieties are propagated by layering and in-arching. The fruit is often gathered while green and made into a delicious pickle, which is exported in considerable quantities. The ripe fruit is eaten raw and also made into jam, like the plum of the temperature zone. This is also an excellent study of racial type; note also the sombrero and clothing, light in weight and color, all adapted to the tropical heat of Mexico. Copyright by The Keystone View Company".
