Al reverso: "10929 BANANAS AND ORANGES This picture is a strange mixture of the familiar and the unusual. We have seen long stalks laden with fruit like those of us have hanging from the trees, but few of us have seen such tropical foliage. The Mexicans are fortunate because in the climate of the lower parts of the republic bananas, oranges, and other tropical fruits grow abundantly, and they can have delicius fruit at small cost. The refrigerator car has made the tropical fruits become as well known to the dweller in the United States as to the inhabitants of Mexico. Of course the fruit which we have has been shipped and has therefore lost some of its flavor. The country is mountainous, and the remperature decreases as one goes farther up the mountain side. In these warm countries a city may be several hundred feet above the sea level and enjoy a perpetual June climate, while only a few miles away, but lower down, there is a hot tropical atmosphere. It is here the tropical fruit is raised, and sent fresh to the fortunate city dwellers in the mountains who can live in the climate and still enjoy the fresh tropical fruits. The banana is a prennial herbaceus plant. Every year it sends up a stem fifteen or twenty feet high, which is crowned with leaves ten feet long. This stem is only a parent stem, composed of the closely folded leaf sheaths. Ar the flowering period a true stem develops carrying many inconspicuos tubular flowers which are closely crowded . From these the fruit develops. Oranges grown on small trees. Copyright by The Keystone View Company". V.F. 600999.
