- La historia de la institucionalización de la antropología victoriana estuvo marcada en buena medida por los debates generados entre la Ethnological Society of London (ESL) y la Anthropological Society of London (ASL), y la manera en que tales contiendas fueron resueltas, aparentemente, con la fundación en 1871 del Royal Anthropological Institute (RAI). Sin embargo, recuentos previos no han considerado, que la aparición del RAI fue posible gracias a la interacción sostenida entre ESL y ASL a lo largo de la década de 1860 en las reuniones anuales de la British Association for the Advancement of Science (BAAS), que sucedieron en la provincia británica, y que involucraron a diversos grupos en el desarrollo de las ciencias del hombre. Tales reuniones se realizaron en espacios mucho más públicos respecto de lo que sucedía en la Ethnological Society o en la Anthropological Society de Londres. Este trabajo se basa en la literatura periódica de la época, materiales de archivo y otras fuentes primarias no estudiadas anteriormente, con el objetivo dereconstruir el proceso de consolidación de la antropología victoriana mediante un examen de los debates sobre las ciencias del hombre, con un enfoque especial en las reuniones anuales de la BAAS, entre 1863 y 1870.
- Abstract:
- The history of the institutionalization of Victorian anthropology was marked, to a large extent, by the debates held between the Ethnological Society of London (ESL) and the Anthropological Society of London (ASL), and the way in which such battles were resolved, apparently, was with the foundation –in 1871– of the Royal Anthropological Institute (RAI). However, previous accounts have ignored the fact that the emergence of the RAI was only possible thanks to the sustained interaction between the ESL and the ASL throughout the 1860s, at the annual meetings of the British Association for the Advancement of Science (BAAS), which were held in Britain; this involved several groups specializing in the development of the sciences. Such meetings were held in many other public spaces with regard to what took place at the Ethnological Society, or at the Anthropological Society of London. This paper is based on the media/literature of the time, archival materials, and other primary sources not previously studied, thus reconstructing the consolidation process regarding Victorian anthropology through the examination of debates on the sciences, with a special focus on the annual meetings of the BAAS, from 1863 to 1870.
